Perfect Roast Chestnuts

Perfect Roast Chestnuts

  • Serves 8-10

  • 1 hour 20 minutes

What You'll Need

  • 1 pound of fresh chestnuts (or more!)
  • A chestnut scoring tool or paring knife
  • Heat-proof bowl
  • Kettle or pot to boil water
  • Slotted spoon
  • Sheet pan or roasting pan
  • Parchment paper (optional)
  • A serving bowl or chestnut cones (for an extra festive touch)

Keep Them Fresh

1) Keep fresh chestnuts in the refrigerator until you’re ready to roast. Store them in a sealed container in your crisper drawer—they’ll stay fresh for up to 10 days.

Prep your Chestnuts

2) Score each chestnut by slicing an "x" across the outer shell with the included chestnut scorer or a paring knife. This creates an opening for steam to escape. Don’t skip this step! Un-scored chestnuts could explode in the oven.

3) Soak the scored chestnuts in a hot water bath for 10 minutes. Place your chestnuts in a heat-proof bowl (no plastic, please) and add enough boiling water to fully cover. Preheat your oven to 300ºF.

Roast and Enjoy

4)  Line a baking sheet with parchment paper (if using). Remove chestnuts from the water bath with a slotted spoon and place them on the sheet. Be careful when handling—chestnuts may be hot.

5) Pop that pan into the oven! Roast for 1 hour at 300ºF.

6) Use a set of tongs or your slotted spoon to place 5 - 6 roasted chestnuts in each cozy chestnut club cone. Chestnuts can also be served in individual dishes or passed around in a large serving bowl.

7) Peel the chestnuts by breaking away the shell starting at the scored opening. Enjoy their nutty goodness and don’t hesitate to go back for seconds.
